For every Poison, Mötley Crüe or other ‘80s hair-band that found stardom beyond the Sunset Strip, there were dozens of other acts whose time in the spotlight lasted only slightly longer than the scent of their hairspray in record company elevators. Among them was XYZ, who found short-lived major label fame at the height of Hollywood’s mid-’80s hard-rock heyday. After gigging regularly at the Whisky a Go Go, the band attracted the attention of Don Dokken, to whom frontman Terry Ilous earned frequent comparisons. Taking the band under his wing, the multi-platinum metallion produced XYZ’s self-titled debut album, which ranged from hard-rock opener “Inside Out” to obligatory power ballads like “What Keeps Me Loving You.” The album barely crawled into the nether regions of the Top 100, after which XYZ released one more Capitol Records album, the tellingly titled Hungry, before calling it quits. Yet, seemingly against all odds, XYZ re-formed back in 2003 and have continued to make records and play small clubs ever since. Herman’s Hideaway, a venerable Denver venue that’s booked upcoming gigs with fellow ‘80s survivors Anvil and Kix, may not represent the level of success that landed XYZ on MTV’s Headbangers Ball, but that’s all the more reason to give them credit for staying at it.
