Metallica, according to Lars Ulrich, would not have existed — or, at least, he wouldn’t be in it — were it not for the musical inspiration of their Bay Area predecessors Y&T, a group that’s better remembered by the likes of Don Dokken and Sammy Hagar than they are by fans of the melodic metal genre they helped pioneer. Originally named Yesterday & Today, Dave Meniketti and his bandmates had already entered the second decade of their career by the time they scored their 1985 MTV hit “Summer Girls,” which fit nicely alongside “Jump”-era Van Halen. While the group may not have been pretty enough to compete with their Hollywood hair-band counterparts, their meat-and-potatoes approach to hard rock has kept them going onstage and in the studio, quietly racking up an estimated 4 million album sales along the way. Y&T released its 13th studio album Acoustic Classix Vol. 1 in January, and a documentary called On with the Show — which Meniketti has been putting the “finishing touches” on since early 2017 — is expected to see the light of day by year’s end.
