You looked good

Long Story Short

You often hear it said that we live in an accelerated news cycle. That seems particularly noticeable now as media do their year-end reviews.

Nationally, 2014 began with a focus on the rollout of the Affordable Care Act, which was succeeded by stories of Central American children on the U.S. border, then the crisis in veterans' health care, Gaza, Ebola and ISIS, until even hardened news junkies had vertigo.

We hope our "Year in Pictures," starting here, makes for a quieter walk around our coverage in 2014, an image at a time, from the deflation of the Colorado Balloon Classic in the Springs to the troubles of El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa, the mixed results of the midterm elections and the advent of legal rec pot in Manitou. There are some constants here, too: the mountains, wildlife, music and sports — the sorts of things that glue us to a place and color our lives.

In news, our 2014 probably also seemed plenty hectic as we burbled wide-eyed about the latest City Council maneuver or Doug Lamborn's reelection, things that are already starting to seem ephemeral. But look at Matthew Schniper's photo of Chuck Snow: It's simply a man standing on a rooftop downtown on a summer evening, playing his guitar, a hint of the mountains behind him, and it seems eternal.

Thanks for helping to make last year in the Springs memorable.
