Re: “The tick and the time bomb

Some early research suggests a possible cause for differences in Lyme disease symptoms from one person to another: genetic variation. See: New York Academy of Sciences http://www.nyas.org/ebrief/miniEB.asp?ebriefID=503 (genetic variants in B burgdorferi, the Lyme disease organism) The Journal of Immunology: 2003, 171: 893-901 2005, 175:2534-2540 (Look up abstracts on http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/) (genetic variants in humans, using mouse models in one study) There does not seem to be any testing at this time for the genetic variants described in these studies. But it may be on the horizon, especially if more research is done to understand the variable presentation of Lyme disease. Anyone wanting to contribute to research about Lyme disease (or any other health issue) can search for opportunities at the following website: http://clinicaltrials.gov There are at least a couple of studies on Lyme disease that are currently recruiting subjects. You can get details of studies, learn if you meet criteria for participation, and often get contact info for the research coordinator so you can ask specific questions. Participating in research contributes to the greater good, but you also get contact with folks who are experts in the field. A nice side benefit which usually isnt outlined in study consent forms.
