I don't think it's typical for a palm strike to drive the nose bone into the brain, unless you're really trying for that specifically. Breaking the cartilage would blacken the eyes and result in a "popping" noise, plus a really good bloody nose and blackened eyes. One would expect blood on the floor/sidewalk.
So he only could have ID'ed his attacker had his attacker been found quickly enough to still have black eyes and/or a swollen nose.
I'm less trained, so would have tried an improvised weapon and/or elbow to the face, plus screaming like heck.
Would it have been me, I also would have filed the report, even if nothing came of it.
