Re: “Cracks in the code

First of all, thanks to Ms. Zubeck and Dr. Malmstrom for doing the Air Force Academy's job. The American taxpayer has spends tremendous amounts of money on the Academy, and we need to hold those in leadership positions accountable for it.

The problem at USAFA in recent years is pretty clear. It is not that they recruit worse young men and women than USMA or USNA. All three SAs basically draw from the same pool of candidates. The main problem is a severe lack of leadership from the Supt and Dean (and her Vice Dean). The Supt's use of inappropriate influence in getting his son admitted to USAFA (described by “Wears Blue”) and the rule bearing his wife's name are known to many associated with USAFA. It is just a symptom of systemic corruption and arrogance. There are many problems that need to be addressed at USAFA, but filling leadership positions with qualified and honorable leaders would be a great start. Consider a few more examples of what has been going on at the Academy over the past few years.

1) The current Vice Dean took a year away from his department head duties to write the accreditation self-study report, and was not able to truthfully characterize the faculty credentials (according to the AF IG).

2) The Dean made a statement to Ms. Zubeck of this newspaper that untruthfully described the USAFA faculty credentials and never corrected the statement (according to the AF IG).

3) The Dean directed one of her subordinates to engage in counter-insurgency (COIN) activities against the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (reported by this paper and the AF Times). This is an unconscionable attempt to restrict an American organization's First Amendment Rights.

4) The Dean lied under oath about the above COIN statement while being deposed in a lawsuit (reported by this paper and the AF Times).

There are also many problems beyond the honor code issues. Recent drug investigations have been well reported. Courts martial for sexual assault have also been in the news in the past few weeks.

The problem starts with a complete lack of leadership. Senior officers who routinely violate the standards they are charged to uphold serve as the worst kind of examples for cadets. The first action should be to clean out the officers at the top. The Academy needs a superintendent who worries about more than the football program and has academic credentials similar to presidents of comparable institutions. They also need a dean who can lead an academic faculty and has an academic record that justifies promotion above assistant professor. USAFA owes cadets, the Air Force, and the U.S. taxpayer the best leadership. Right now, it's not there.

Re: “UPDATE: Academy's Born and Fullerton found "negligent"

I've watched this conversation with some amazement. Dr. Mullin has unjustly had abuse heaped upon him. There are just too many crazy accusations to address them all. For example, Dr. Mullin is not anti-religious; rather, he is a deeply spiritual and religious man. He just thinks the first amendment means something. I also find it interesting that there are so many unverifiable accusations about Dr. Mullin's job performance despite AF regulations and laws designed to protect our privacy.

For the record, Dr. Mullin was one of the most highly qualified economists teaching at USAFA. He earned a Ph.D. (Economics) from the University of Virginia, he is a CPA, and he arrived at USAFA with teaching experience at very good colleges. During his 13 years on the USAFA faculty, he was recognized for teaching excellence and was promoted to associate professor.

This story is about the results of an IG investigation into the behavior of two senior AF officers. If there is anything in the story that is false or misleading, please let the rest of us know. In the mean time, don't shoot the messenger.
