The Austin Bluffs Open Space Master Plan is now available for public review and comment. Initiated a year ago by the Colorado Springs Parks Department, and led by THK Associates, the plan covers Pulpit Rock Regional Park, University Park Open Space and Austin Bluffs Open Space. Loosely defined as east of Nevada Avenue, north of Austin Bluffs Parkway and UCCS, west of Academy and Union Boulevards, and south of Dublin Boulevard, the three parcels either border or are in close proximity to each other and together total approximately 600 acres. Once adopted, the plan will be the guiding document for the area for the next 10 to 15 years. Public comment on the master plan is being accepted through Jan. 27, 2020. The master plan can be found here, and an appendix here.
[pdf-1] The final "Re-Imagine Waldo Canyon" public meeting will be held Jan. 22, 2020, at the Westside Community Center, 1628 W. Bijou Street from 5:30-7 p.m.
The Foothills Trail in the Garden of the Gods Park will reopen Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, following a long closure while work on the city's Camp Creek drainage improvement plan has been in progress. Although the trail will re-open, the city is warning users that construction will still be going on near the trail and asks users to stick to designated trails.
And finally, legislation signed into law by President Trump on December 20th 2019 elevated White Sands National Monument in New Mexico to National Park status. The change makes it the 62nd, and newest, National Park in the U.S. Originally designated as a National Monument by President Hoover in 1933, the park's massive dunes of gypsum that give it it's name make it a place that should be on your "must-visit" list.
