Re: “Mark Waller tagged for statewide honor

Waller is a disgrace, he has a "circle around the wagon" mentality in protecting his corrupt sheriff buddy. Waller needs to recognize that he represents the PEOPLE of El Paso County, he has a duty to investigate the allegations of crimes and misconduct by the sheriff.

What happened to the appraisals for the Jenkins land swaps? Did that story die? They seemed really smelly too!

Re: “UPDATE: Dobson endorses Roy Moore for Senate

We have a huge problem happening with endorsements for scumbags like Roy Moore coming from 501(c)(3)s like Focus on the Family, and from church groups.

Re: “Reader: Let's talk about helping vs. enabling

Well, Peter, I have put in four-plus decades of providing aid to homeless and other people in need. During that time, I'd like to think we might have learned a few things. One of those is that handouts have unintended side effects. I've stated in many places that the concern is with a small minority of the homeless population.

The "Albuquerque plan"? It has not gotten rid of panhandlers in that city. It HAS however informed much of the populace there that the guy flying a sign very likely was offered a job THAT DAY and has turned it down in order to keep begging. It has had a slight positive impact on the scene. I believe we should run that experiment in our town as well. The "homeless establishment" sees no reason to even discuss this possibility. Viva la Status Quo - remember? There are LOTS of good ideas out there, I simply dislike seeing them go "SPLAT" against a brick wall and going no further.

Believe me, I am VERY well acquainted with the "it can happen to anybody" theme of homelessness. Nine years ago I enjoyed a comfortable income (with health care benefits) working as a nurse as I volunteered at several agencies in town. I did that lifestyle for many years. Got crippled on my employer's operating table (Penrose Hospital) and then FIRED by Penrose "because I could no longer do the work". Ended up in very poor health with no health insurance, could have lost the house. It really CAN "happen to anyone".

My main point is, that unless we as a community of providers (and funders) starting getting to know each and every recipient of this town's largesse, we will continue to have the "bum problem" as the Westside Pioneer editor terms it. It is NOT women with kids fleeing domestic violence, it is NOT folks coping with poor health and/or job loss, it is NOT someone who truly is "down on their luck". It is a real actively small number of folks who have opted out of trying to leave the streets. The Pioneer Editor makes it clear, he is only discussing the minority part of the homeless population who fit the "bum" catagory. Encouraging this is not good for these individuals and it is not good for our community in general.
Peter, if you had been attending the monthly homeless providers' meetings (CHAP), you would have been unable to avoid noticing the relentless replacement of volunteer driven services with paid people. It is unavoidable, the agency will take on a different atmosphere. "Sorry buddy, it's 5:08 PM. We close at five." That sort of thing. Ever been at the Soup Kitchen as they are approaching 1PM? The "Security Team" yells at you to leave so they can knock down the tables. The Kitchen didn't act that way in the all-volunteer days when Steve Handen ran it. I suppose I really shouldn't get upset at this process, it is kind of unavoidable, like growing old.
It sounds like we are on the same side, Peter. I simply like to approach things using both head and heart.....

Re: “UPDATE: Dobson endorses Roy Moore for Senate

No one cares what FoF does or says. They lost the culture wars when Colorado Amendment 2 was struck down by SCOTUS.

https://www.britannica.com/event/Romer-v-E…

FoF has had to layoff hundreds since Amendment 2. Their small and shrinking base would vote for a pedophile over a democrat no matter what FoF says about it.

Bottom line...put a fork in FoF. Yup. They're done.

Re: “The mass eviction at Emerald Towers Apartments is just the tip of the iceberg

Even at Greccio, your gross monthly income has to be 3 TIMES the rent youre paying in order to qualify for their housing assistance. That means for that so-called affordable rent of $1,100/month, you need to be grossing $3,300/month. Even for a single person, if they found you a place for $700/month youd need to be making $2,100/month to be qualified. Impossible with the low-wage jobs here (average pay for an Executive/Administrative Assistant is $12-$13/hour. Thats if you have a college degree and some experience. If youre working as a 7-11 clerk, at minimum wage, forget it). Supposedly their waitlist is over a year long. What are people who fall under that limit supposed to do?

Re: “UPDATE: Dobson endorses Roy Moore for Senate

James Dobson and Focus on the Family received $2,3M from the Koch Bros. So the question is, When James Dobson speaks is he speaking for Jesus or a shill for the Koch Bros?
Supporting a suspected pedophile is not the Christian way. The Koch Bros. want Roy Moore in the Senate so they can get their coveted tax breaks that the unwashed (you) will never get.
Its best to keep in mind that Focus On the Family is a business-nothing more and nothing less.

Re: “UPDATE: Dobson endorses Roy Moore for Senate

Are we here in Colorado surprised? NO, because we've watched and fought back for almost 20 years against the heartless cruelty Focus on the Family christians have brought to our state and the negative impact they have had.

For instance just one of many examples, we've had to spend our money to campaign against and defeat Personhood amendments endorsed by Focus on the Family christians from their headquarters and pulpits in 3 elections. No other state has had to do this.

Re: “Strawberry Fields' appraiser faces penalties for his work on the city's land exchange

Thank you for the superb article, Pam. Truly Pulitzer Prize quality. This is exactly the kind of scrutiny this crooked deal deserves.

And, I totally agree with the previous comment. Given the crookedness of the deal and lack of public input, I believe the deal should be undone.

Re: “Strawberry Fields' appraiser faces penalties for his work on the city's land exchange

Don Knight's comments show the total duplicity of his views when it comes to different appraisals done by the City and the Broadmoor. When referencing the 189 acre Strawberry plot (valued at 1.6M) he states that, "the land was staying park land. That's why I didn't object that the values weren't 10 times more". The Bear Creek parcel appraisal however was accepted with an extremely high value (1.4 M for only 9 acres) despite the fact that it will remain park land as well. "The Bear Creek parcel, zoned for single family homes, was appraised as residential lots. The city, however, has no plans to build on the land and will maintain it as a park." Hello Don Knight... don't wring your hands and say there is nothing yo
u can do. It was fraud, pure and simple. And ghost writing an amicus brief? Unethical.
Thank you Pam for a very thorough and well researched piece. Too bad that the council rushed this decision through despite so many unanswered important questions that they themselves brought up during the process. The public is threatened not only with losing a historic piece of parkland, but is clearly on the losing end of the monetary swap as well.

Re: “Reader: I apologize

And to be attacked in the "comments" is absolute confirmation of the bigotry that abounds here in this city. The fact is that "political correctness" is actually thought control and it is working. "Celebrate diversity" as a motto a while back was actually a call to action, to stage small criminal acts and point fingers at the predicted "perpetrators". You reap what you sow. When all else fails make it up. The more you protest the more you promote.
If you are a homosexual teenager stuck in the wrong body and are suffering from paranoid thoughts of outside aggressors stalking you and you disagree with the history of the world as it is written then hey, it sucks to be you. No bumper sticker can cure you. Maybe a parade might make you happy for a day or two but that's it.
I apologize for nothing but I am sorry to have to be exposed to such childish behaviors and insults based only on my skin color and gender. People who do not talk to me do not know me. Don't go around identifying your imaginary enemies and do not let others aid you in that folly, it's a bottomless pit of despair. Misery loves company.

Re: “Reader: Let's talk about helping vs. enabling

Sounds like Matthew Parkhouse, RN hsn't done much other than complain. Recently I noticed the Westside Pioneer Editor has used issue after issue to label the homeless as enabled bums. The unsympathetic in this town would rather step over dead bodies than give someone socks and a sleeping bag. I thought Matthew might be trying to think a point through until reading his 'additional piece' as onemorevoter which I am sure is not meant to point out that the there are non profits in this town not paying themselves salaries to help the homeless. I'd suggest trying to direct people to a blog would have been more worthy Mr. Parkhouse. Tell people how your 'Arizona plan' would benefit the town.

It is the season to give and I hope while choosing charities purposefully that people will be more emphatic towards the circumstances of others. It would be great if the proper helping hand could manage an apt row (like on Fillmore with easy access to the bus) where people could be helped back on their feet. Most people are a pay check away from being thrown out and won't find a place easily. Bless the friends I have who have taken other family friends in when tossed from their rentals so the landlord could raise the rent.

Maybe our town is 'homeless friendly' but maybe some of the people have jobs. STOP handing out money. The pan handlers are plentiful for one reason. Different people with the same dog on a corner means that is a racket. Government shouldn't have to fix this problem. Another group of people could help shelters with offering support for people who need bus ticket Vs. some day work. People who are critical should go get to know people without having such an attitude. This holiday season stop looking down your nose at people. Say good morning to the person walking through the neighborhood with the shopping cart. I do hand out packs of dog kibble and garbage bags.

Re: “UPDATE: Dobson endorses Roy Moore for Senate

this is why religion is dying... this toxic, manipulative, selfish, controlling and abusive fairy tale has become, at its core rotten. they have no problem persecuting gays... because...religious "morality". the kindness Jesus preached has become so conditional, with so many strings attached, that it's just not even worth it anymore for most of these pretend religious.
for a church leader to defend a pedophile... who still buys this crap???

Re: “Banning Lewis Ranch: $49 million in tax revenue over 30 years

The idea that development of BLR will "add $41 billion to the city's economy" is presented as though that is a benefit. It means nothing. That is $41 billion being spent. It doesn't mean our air is cleaner, our traffic runs more smoothly or the average accounting clerk in town is earning more money or is happier.

Without a doubt The Independent has hit new lows in every department. I am compelled to pick up a copy every week and cringe while doing so but one needs to know what crap is being fabricated and reported as "news".

Re: “In the age of #MeToo, a good man is hard to find

I cannot even finish reading this article. I am incensed and almost enraged. The mere simple-minded assumption of something is now proof of guilt?! How are the writers and editors of such insults and dangerous immaturity even employed not to mention published? How can one justify the blanket slandering of half the population?
To imply that every single male is guilty of sexual harassment or about to be is crossing a line that public media has straddled for too long, the line between bad taste and complete insanity. The Independent is publishing writings of a mob mentality and for those who do not know what that is it simply means an angry group that thinks with one mind, a mind that is malfunctioning. This mob though sells advertising space with its lynchings.
The horror of it all is that those coming of age will see this type of writing or "reporting" as normal (they are not even credible allegations) and view the targets as just that, targets, Targets to be attacked and maligned or avoided and it is all bullshit being taught them.
