Re: “Reader: The timing of the movement couldn't be better

DNC Rigging the Primaries, simplified
Mom and Dad: Hey kids, only 1 of you gets a playstation for xmas but they are expensive. We are asking both of you to pitch in 50 bucks to help out with the cost. (Timmy and Jane both hand over 50 bucks each)
Mom and Dad: We decided to give Jane the playstation before we even asked for the 50 bucks. Here you go Jane.
Timmy: That's not fair, can I get my 50 bucks back, or can you guys at least apologize?
Mom and Dad: No. You get neither. But next year we are giving one of you an xbox 1 and those are expensive too. We really really want you to pitch in 50 bucks again.
Timmy: I need new parents.

Re: “Reader: Drivers, manslaughter is not on your bucket list

I'm sorry you had such bad luck, but don't pretend every driver is out to get you. Even on my worst bike commute ever, I interacted with two stupid people, and about 600 other vehicles that respected me and my space.

Re: “In race to the top, women of color unfairly come in last

Black women -- and black men, who in your mind don't exist-- would be much better off, had not liberals committed one of the most racist acts in history:

This is not what you think it is.

Re: “The cost of cutting people and pay

I'm sorry, but isn't this the same thing that Whole Foods did to Natural Food Cooperatives and mom & pop markets all over the country? I get that this article is not ultimately about Amazon and Whole Foods, per se. But it's what RedBox and Netflix did to Blockbuster, as well as a whole lot of other independently owned video rental stores. It's what Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts did to smaller coffee shops, and what the fast food conglomerates did to chicken and fish shacks all over the country.

Companies/corporations of any size are obligated to provide a good customer experience, and that's what makes a customer come back. People like the food at McDonalds, and they like that it tastes the same no matter where they go. People like not having to plan their week around a video rental (when to pick it up, how to decide what to watch, when it has to be returned, etc.), and so Netflix was successful.

If customers truly value the experience of talking to a cashier, then this platform will not succeed. As someone who worked at a video store, I thought people would miss having recommendations. Turns out it's pretty easy to solicit them from Facebook, and build your Netflix queue. Video store clerks are obsolete, like rotary phones and dial-up internet. Get nostalgic all you want, but blaming corporations for keeping up with technology and consumer demand won't give these workers more desirable workforce skills. Let's focus on where jobs are headed, and how to get people trained for the jobs that are sitting unfilled right now.

Re: “Reader: Continue to fight for justice

While true this generation is the first to face these obstacles as my generation was to face what we faced and so on in history. Changing times change the future. But to suggest that past generations move out of your way is not correct. No one is just going to move aside it took to much to get where there at. Embrace past generations learn from them they got things done and so can you if both would sit down and listen if the hard heads would soften, listen, learn and compromise. But I guess Im asking to much in this you against me world we live in these days.

Re: “The transgender military debate: policy versus culture

@ Rene Jax,
Obstinant, aren't you?
Ash Carter established a commission to study the effects of open transgender service on readiness. The commission included two general/flag officers. The commission came to the conclusion that that there is no reason transgender personnel cannot serve openly, and that lifting the ban would have no impact on readiness.
From the article: Since Carter's initial announcement last year, many people within the military community have spoken out against trans people serving openly in the armed forces. Their arguments have focused, like Mattis', on readiness and unit morale. Their sentiments match those of the War Department in 1940, regarding the racial integration of the U.S. military, which argued that integration would "produce situations destructive to morale and detrimental to the preparation for national defense."
The exact same arguments were used during the debate surrounding the repeal of Don't So, Don't Tell.

Re: “Reader: Continue to fight for justice

It would be an interesting piece of journalism to sit Perry and Barad down together with someone to facilitate a dialogue and publish the results. They obviously are talking past each other and both seem to care very much about the world they live in.

Re: “Reader: We all know why the Civil War took place

"US Army Retired" but no rank. Unusual so it is probably a lie as well as the comment being incorrect and also bigoted. Brown, you do not know a goddam thing about very little do you...?
Those who make the "slavery" comment are not thinking logically or speaking from any facts on The Civil War so I won't waste my time educating them.
I am very tired of those who malign people who live in the Southern states but I only read that crap on the 'Net- I never hear it in public. We know why that is as well.
Speaking of racism, anyone who supports the War On Drugs should know that drug laws were based in racism. So anyone on high horse can climb on down. You do not know the first thing about drugs or racism if you listen to your government. Why not free the Blacks that are in prison due to unjust laws? 1 in 3 black men will go to prison while blacks are 12% of US population their numbers in prison exceeds 50%. Not too free are they...
As for a flag being a "symbol of hate" is in reality saying that slave owners hated Africans so they captured and enslaved them. That they starved and beat them along with letting them die from diseases as well is beyond absurd. (History is not depicted in any factual way by Tarantino.) Slaves cost money and they earned money for their owners so tell me where this " hate" enters into the picture. Please.
Cotton was the biggest selling import/export in the world so you can be sure that slaves were treated better than most people treat workers today. Greed, money and tax on cotton export was the cause of the war...
Why did the Civil Rights Bill take 100 years to enact if the North was so big on freeing people? Why did the Democratic Party resist Civil Rights right on through the 1950's?
The Dred Scott decision by the Supreme Court in 1855 ruled that Africans freed from slavery were not citizens so where is thy noble Northern cause?
How about abolitionist John Brown? He fought to free slaves and the US government hanged him. Not so noble when you rob an military armory to supply weapons to slaves who did not show up for the insurrection anyway.
Never in history have so many fought and died to free another race from slavery. Never. Nobody fought to end slavery anywhere at any time. You might as well start saying WWII was fought to free the Jews...

Re: “Another reader's take on Incline traffic

I think it's well known that the athletes who do it for time, go during the low peak times to avoid those who are new or are just trying to avoid the overall traffic. Maybe Matt should try this approach. I take the incline down but I constantly give the uphill hikers the right away and make an aggressive effort to stay out of their way.

I'm sure negative remarks could also be stated about those sprinting down Barr Trail and almost run over those who are trying to walk down.

No matter which way you look at it, the point is to be smart about when you hike up/down the trail and always be considerate of others. Every hike can be safe or dangerous based on how you choose to approach it. Be safe!

Re: “Reader: Continue to fight for justice

Trub, I have never claimed to be the first, or the only. It is only because of previous generations that I have the chance to fight today. That said, it would be disingenuous to suggest that any generation in recent memory has faced the obstacles we are facing. The point of this piece isn't to blame or divide, it's to counter Glen's message of ignorance and hate.

On the other hand I've had millennial and younger blame all their problems on anyone who is over 40. It's nice that you've made an impact young man however you need to remember you are not the first person to fight.
