Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

Not sure that the frame isnt a not-so-subtle revelation of how we perceive nature, how we've relegated nature to no more than a pretty picture or a source of revenue.
Then again, the ambiguity of this frame somehow provokes thoughts beyond its existential presence...how our views are constrained, managed by others, encouraged to disregard the big picture that can be seen simply by stepping back, or around.
It would be interesting to watch how individuals spontaneously respond upon encountering its unexpected presence, and what those responses could tell us about us.
After all, if the purpose of art is to stimulate a reaction, then, as we see, this is a pretty successful "work of art".
That said, I havent found any indication that any aesthetic considerations were put into the frame, or it's placement. Just as in nature, however, some art is unintentional.
I am reluctant to condemn such. I think I'll visit the FAC and look at some frames.

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

There needs to be accountability for those who broke the rules and allowed this. That is the problem with government these days - do what you want, to heck with what the tax paying citizens want or their rights. This kind of behavior is not ethical, it is not sustainable, and it should never be acceptable. We need to demand accountability and responsibility NOW.

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

The Garden of the Gods park was founded with this intent: known forever as the Garden of the Gods "where it shall remain free to the public, where no intoxicating liquors shall be manufactured, sold, or dispensed, where no building or structure shall be erected except those necessary to properly care for, protect, and maintain the area as a public park." This should never have been allowed to proceed. It is detracting from the natural beauty of the park and destroys a beautiful view all in the name of the commercialism of our city. No task force or group should be allowed to deface public lands. Additionally, it has been said it will be reviewed in 2018. Why do we have to keep "undoing" projects leaders in this city think are best for the citizens? This needs to be removed immediately and recalls started for anyone in leadership who allowed this. At this rate, we should simply brand our city nepotism crony springs.

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

Do you feel:

This art/sculpture frame adds to the beauty of the park and should remain, or

Detracts from the beauty of the park and should be taken down?

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

While the G, being a daily, broke this story earlier (I believe?), the INDY (as always) is doing the heavy lifting to keep this on the front burner. Kudos also to Jill Gaebler who had the tact to nicely request the removal and the guts to suggest what the citizens were liable to do if not heard.

A shameless commodification of a national natural treasure. A boneheaded mistake in all respects.

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

This is tacky and doesn't belong inside the park. Maybe if they wanted to put it in the parking lot it would be less of an eyesore. The beauty of Garden of the Gods is in the natural glory of the scenery. This looks like something you would expect to find on the old boardwalk in Atlantic City NOT in one of our cities most popular tourist attractions.

Id be interested in what Hannigan has to say about all this. https://www.csbj.com/2012/09/21/aspen-valley-ranch-provides-cultural-renaissance/

It shouldnt be a surprise that the same person making decisions on the PPCF board came up with the idea for that hideous blue picture frame at Garden of the Gods thats getting such great reviews.

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

Related to former councilwoman Martin's comment:

"Jan Martin says the way the frame was handled demonstrates why it's important to get public input on such matters."

When Ms. Martin was on council, with Scott Hente, Randy Purvis, Tim Leigh and others - going way back to even when Margie Vasquez was on city council, 'public input' was something more than just a buzzword phrase. There were events, I really believe, that would have had different outcomes had 'public input' not been considered important and considered by those councils of their time.

Today, is 'public input' really worth even as much as a bucket of warm spit? To quote John Nance Garner?

The public input was to allow recreational marijuana. How is that working?

The public, when they finally heard about C4C that is now possibly C2C, gave their input and if I recall, 'public input' did not favor C4C at all!

The Stawberry Patch drama that is still ongoing. Public input was definitly against the swap.

How is that working out?

We stopped using the word 'fountain pen' years ago because it was somewhat irrelevent in that hardly anyone actually uses a fountain pen.

Perhaps the word 'public input' is one that should no longer be used? Hell, it's a word that gets used 120 times a day or so but it is like a pen with no ink coming out! There but useless.

Re: “Framing the Garden of the Gods

This so much reminds me of the early 50's - - when Colorado Springs had nothing going for it but it's beautiful scenery for revenue - - and people depended on tourism only from May to October hoping to be able to squirrel away enuff nuts and bucks to make it though the winter.

Fort Carson was here. Ent Air Force Base was here. And Peterson. But they were small and provided 'keep the heat on' revenue only for the locals. Norad was not. That did not come till around 54 or so as a solid, squat block windowless building located at what is now the SW corner of the parking garage at Memorial Hospital facing Boulder street.

Then, with the Interstate coming, there was opened a quarry to dynamite rocks and make gravel. Leaving that immense ugly white scar on the side of the mountains - the very mountains that people drove and flew hundreds of miles to see - and to enjoy - and to spend the money the tourist town people had to live on as their only source of revenue. Potentially threatening what was their only source of making a living at the time! Really!

I remember sitting with my Dad at the BJ Tastee Freeze just 'lickin cones' in 1957 when he explained that ugly scar on the side of the beautiful mountain:

"Knucklehead, these people probably should not be allowed to govern themselves!"

(Same Tastee Freeze that is still there at Union and Palmer Park across from what was then East Junior High School)

Janet: you 'lick cones' at the Tastee Freeze? Maybe Dad saw you.
